This is one of the many reasons I love Mastodon. Not only are they unbelievably talented musicians and very professional entertainers on stage, but they have a sense of humor and not one bit afraid to use it. see what I mean below, kids.
I worked the old laptop to it's death. But it went down fighting, rightly deserving it's place in the halls of Valvehalla. Some would have thrown it to the wolves for being such an utter piece of garbage. I, however, decided to give it a chance, and it proved to me that beyond it's crooked eyes, and uneven legs, it's lack of ability to perform simple tasks, it had what it took to do what I forced upon it. Somewhat. Kind of. For a little bit. Good god, I'm glad that piece of shit is gone.
ALAS! I have before me a newer, sleeker, leaner, meaner, sexy little beast that can not only handle what I throw at it, but chew it up, digest it, and shit out a fully complete, and badass song deserving of the ValveDriver name. So much so, that I even named it Berserkrinn. Or, for those of you that haven't used wiki...Berserker. Or, for those of you who don't use wiki...the fierce warriors that just wouldn't die in battle back when the vikings roamed the Earth. So, with that being said, now that I've transferred all of my necessary files from the old POS to the new one, it's time for a viking burial. Or, more accurately, I'm a set that old summbitch on fire and watch it burn!
This is mostly an experiment with vid-cap and Youtube posting/embedding here on the site. Aside from that, this is how it all starts. Whenever I start a new song, I always start with the bass synth. There's no real rhyme or reason as to why I do. I just do. I almost never have any idea what I'm going to end up with either. I just open up a new saw wave, and start tweaking. Which is exactly what I did in this lil' vid. In this case, I'm using Serum, and going with a kind of Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Neurofunk type liquid bass. Kind of. This is a quick look at the process I take. If I had been doing this for an actual track, I would have taken a lot more time, and went into post effects in the mixer. But, we'll save all of that for another video. If you're too "busy" to watch the entire 13 minutes, the original saw wave sound is at 0:38, then you can skip ahead to the finished sound around 12:40. Enjoy.
Take care. V. I enjoy scouring Facebook for unknown, and underrated street musicians. Maybe a sort of vicarious thing. I don't know. I found these guys today. Brothers Moving. They're a band formed in NYC in 2008 by four Danish brothers. They're known for mixing genres and singing in both English and Danish, and their musical style is inspired by blues, funk, reggae, folk and early rock and roll. If you truly dig music, check them out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3AHqcinzZ4 |
